Cyber security at Jisc:

Jisc’s security team safeguards UK Education and Research from a diverse array of cyber security threats, thereby assisting our members and clients in enhancing their digital resilience. We are committed to the creation of a comprehensive security solution that will empower institutions to protect themselves from emergent cyber threats by fostering ongoing development and collaboration.

We are currently in the process of enhancing our Security Operations Centre (SOC) services, which encompass endpoint detection and response, 24-hour security event monitoring, and Security Information and Event Management (SIEM).

About the role:

As a member of the Architecture and Engineering team, you will be responsible for the development of the threat intelligence platforms that underpin the protective features of our Security Centre.

As you work with our threat intelligence teams to develop effective methods for integrating and automating our SIEM, SOAR, and intelligence into efficient and accurate data presentations for analysis, you will be required to apply your understanding of threat intelligence, SIEM, and SOAR platforms.

You must be able to demonstrate the ability to provide professional assistance to technical programs and projects of increasing complexity and scope, as well as previous experience in designing and deploying technical solutions.

The responsibilities will include:

  • Working in conjunction with the threat development and platform teams to ensure the secure installation and management of the threat landscape.
  • Developing and maintaining platforms and applications to assist the cyber security industry.
  • Detecting and mitigating any security hazards, as well as monitoring the security state of services and infrastructure.
  • Developing and revising documentation that adheres to appropriate standards for Jisc and the cyber security section.
  • To function as an escalation point for services and users that are hosted on this infrastructure.

Key Skill and Experience:

Need to have:

  • Experience in software engineering and a security-focused role is advantageous.
  • demonstrated expertise in the development and implementation of technical solutions.
  • Proficient in the administration of Linux servers, SaaS, and IaaS.
  • Previous experience with a variety of prominent web server technologies, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, PHP, Ruby, Java, and Python.
  • Managing, integrating, and deploying a diverse array of open-source and proprietary systems.
  • Previous experience in the automation of systems and processes and the implementation of resilience.
  • The ability to work on numerous projects with strict deadlines and possess strong analytical skills.
  • Strong communication skills, including the capacity to engage in in-depth discussions with both technical and non-technical audiences and motivate them to adopt best practices, are essential.

Nice to have:

  • Qualified in SOAR, SIEM, and threat intelligence, or an equivalent qualification.
  • An understanding of the legislation that regulates the management of unlawful items, network monitoring, investigations, and incident response.
  • Experience and expertise in hybrid, public, and private cloud technologies for enterprise applications.

All employees in our Jisc Cyber Security team are required to complete an enhanced background screening, which may include financial and unspent criminal record checks. This function may be necessary to obtain government security clearance at the SC level.

Additionally, certain positions may necessitate a full UK Security Check (SC) clearance. This process necessitates that you have resided in the United Kingdom for the previous five years and be prepared to undergo it. You must be capable of obtaining security clearance in the United Kingdom.
